Why I loved Wonder Woman.

I will be the first to admit that I am not as knowledgeable about Wonder Woman as I am about Batman and that side of the DC universe. Of course I remember watching re-runs of the 1970s show and I loved watching the Justice League cartoons when I was younger and, although I know about her character and the basics of her story I never seemed to get as invested as I feel like I should. I guess seeing her as a background character more than an equal had a strange effect on me.

I’m righting that wrong, though.

Wonder Woman’s “cameo” in Batman vs Superman was the highlight for me and when I learned that they were making a Wonder Woman film I began to research into her history. The more I read the more excited I became. Of course there is so much to her history that I don’t know but I’m excited to find out.

Now, onto the review.

I. Loved. This. Film.

My mum loved this film. So far, all my friends who have seen it have loved it.

Of Tattoos and things…

You know how I talked about crossing things off your bucket list last post? Well, I crossed another thing off.

I got a new tattoo.

Yep, it’s an origami stegosaur with a splash of water colour.

I now have three tattoos and this is the most visible one. I love it but it is also so new that I still haven’t really come to grips with the reality of it. (It’s on my left forearm in case you were wondering).

I’ve always loved tattoos but have always been apprehensive of getting them in overly visible places. However, I have been through a lot this year and I decided that I wanted to control the next visible change to my body. I have so many scars from various surgeries that I’ve had no choice in receiving (and I don’t regret them at all, let me state that up front right now) so I wanted the chance to control the next “scar” that I got. I mean, my scar from my gallbladder removal is shockingly huge… Not that I really need to justify why I got this… just wanted to explain some of my thought process…

So, I got a dinosaur. Those who know me, irl, know about my obsession with dinosaurs. Heck, I wanted to be a palaeontologist all the way through primary school and then most of high school. Unfortunately, money played a huge part in my decision to go to uni in New Zealand. No regrets though.

So, another thing crossed off the bucket list.

Also, I start a Post Grad Course next month. It’s all to do with Digital and Collaborative Learning.  It’s  done through Unitec and The Mind Lab. It also counts toward 1/3 of a Master’s Degree.

Not to mention that next month is NaNoWriMo. National Novel Writing Month – where the aim is to write 50 000 words in the month of November. I’m managed to successfully achieve this for the past five years.

So, all in all, I’m setting myself up for a busy few months. I’m looking forward to the positive changes.

Oh – and I’m still going with the whole #31daysofhorror – and it’s getting a little tedious but I am still loving it.

31 Days of Horror, Bullet Journaling and Stuff

Admittedly 2016 has not been a good year for me. There have been highlights – most notably San Diego Comic Con – which was so awesome. There are words but none of them are intelligible at this present moment.

But, generally, 2016 has been a ‘suckfest’ in numerous senses. I guess the gallbladder thing takes the cake and I’m still dealing with all that. You’d be surprised at what foods seem to hate me at present. (For those of you who can eat anything after your surgery I’m actually glad and happy for you. Unfortunately, some food goes through me faster than … well I’ll let you finish that off.) It’s been 17 weeks since the surgery and I’ve done a lot of traveling and teaching and thinking. Maybe a little too much in the way of thinking but that’s me.

Anyway, it’s October (seriously, where the hell did the year go) and now it’s heading into Spring (which soon means summer holidays but who’s counting anyway?)

On tumblr the Northern Hemisphere is going wild with it’s fall aesthetic and pumpkin spice lattes (something I have never tried but have heard all about…the nearest Starbucks is over an hour away so … yeah). Plus, all the Halloween pictures appearing  has got me in the mood for horror films. And, thus, I have arrived at the actual topic of my blog today.

I am doing a 31 Days of Horror challenge wherein I attempt to watch 31 horror films this month. I jumped in a little late, starting on the 3rd so watched 3 horrors in a row.

Krampus (2015) which now ties with Gremlins and Die Hard for best Christmas film ever. The Chernobyl Diaries which was terrible but it counts and then I re-watched From Dusk Til Dawn which totally counts cause vampires…Then, on the 4th, I watched Rogue which is about a giant crocodile and stars Radha Mitchell,  Sam Worthington and Mia Wasikowska. Pure and unashamed cheese.

I love horror films. Always have. Especially the slashers of the late 70s and 80s.

I also decided to start bullet journaling last night. This came about after I did some tidying and found no less than 15 unused notebooks/journals in my craft room. I have a problem…

Anyway, I will add some pictures once I get it fully underway.

I also started a teacher focused tumblr if you wanted to check it out. The Caffeinated Teacher. I will probably use that to do more teacher posts and turn this blog back into just a blog about me and the nerdy stuff I like. (Though teaching is a huge part of my life so there will be ideas and thoughts etc… but less of the technical stuff and more of the real stuff…)

So there you go. An update. A not so great update but an update none-the-less.

The One Where I Try To Organise Myself

The holidays went by rather quickly and, although I did a lot of prep work during the break I still started the term feeling a little lost. Due to situations out of my control I’ve had to have a change of class so I have picked up a new Senior class. I’m not too worried about the change and it’s a relatively small class at 18 students but it’s still a change and, like most students will tell you, they hate change. They get annoyed with me if I change the desks around and they get annoyed with me if I don’t. This does amuse me more than it should and it also gives me some valid insight to the student mindset.

Anyway – I thought I would use this post to help my organisation progress.

I have five classes:

9BYOD – This term our focus is Tumatauenga and, looking deeper, we will focus on conflict – namely human vs human, human vs nature, human vs self and human vs society. We started by reading Ray Bradbury’s short story “All Summer in One Day”. We will then look at poems from WW1 and maybe even some short stories as well.

10ENG – This is an advanced class so we are doing two things at once. We are looking at the same short story as above and the same ideas however I have adapted an Independent Novel Study that has seven activities that they must complete. I have told them that they can choose any novel that has a form of conflict in it. Once student has already asked if he could do Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and I am super excited to see what he does with it.

11ENA – This is my big class with 32 students. We have started looking at a semi thematic unit surrounding Conformity, Rebellion and The Teenage Condition. Carrying on from last terms film unit, where we studied Pleasantville we have dived into Catcher in the Rye. I am creating a prezi that sets up every lesson for the student and it works on them figuring out several key techniques and going through the text closely to find their own understanding. Today we focused just on Holden’s hat… This is on of my focus classes this year.

12ENG – This is my new class and, for this term, we will be studying excerpts from The Things They Carried and looking into the context of the Vietnam War and what was happening in New Zealand and the rest of the world at the same time. I’ve started them on a scrapbooking task that will take a lot of the term – they have to research the context and create a virtual study guide – they can use pinterest, prezi or, if they aren’t computer savvy, they can even make a scrapbook. While doing this they can start framing a research project, do some independent reading for personal responses, building on their general knowledge and, most importantly, learn how to write an analytical essay for the external exams.

Finally I have my 13ENI – this class is my smallest with 16 students of varying abilities. They are not sitting externals so are focusing solely on internal standards. We are finishing up our Close Scene Analysis – this is where I got them to analyse two different crime procedurals and talk about how the represent or misrepresent certain groups in society – most focused on how mental illnesses are represented in the shows. Next we will move onto Connections Across Text.

So there is my general overview for this term.

Next are my goals for this term. If you look at my colleague’s blog here you will see how inspirational her organisation is to me. My other colleague has also done a beautiful piece on goals which you should totally check out as well by clicking right here.

So goals – scary thoughts that I am putting out in the world. Okay, here goes…

Small: Time management – I’m really trying to focus on using my time wisely – in class and out of class.

Medium: Up-skilling both in my curriculum area and my technology skills area.

Large: Still working on this because there are so many that I want to focus on…

My question to you is what do you find helpful when trying to organise yourself? What goals do you have for school or for your personal life?

What are you passionate about?

Parent: “You seem so passionate about your subject. What else are you passionate about?”
Me: “Oh I love reading and gaming and using these ideas in the classroom. I really want students to understand that they have different options with regard to…” 
This is a typical interaction that I’ve had with various parents over the last few years of my teaching. The whole idea of discussing what I’m passionate about scares me at times. It means that I am giving voice to something that I keep hidden and, once it’s out there, it’s real…

When I find myself thinking about this question or being asked it I often pause and quickly deconstruct two things: the person asking and the question itself. Maybe deconstruct is not the right word but it is the right sentiment. What do I mean by this? Well, my answer will differ depending on the person who is asking. Not by much but by tone, gesture or even by exaggeration. I also have to think about what I am truly passionate about. And, does the person asking truly want to know or is it a filler question – the kind of question that, as a teacher, I have fallen back on when trying to get students to focus or when trying to identify the students who may be struggling. Filler is the wrong word, focus is the “F” word that I am looking for.

I need to know about the person asking and what their motivations are in asking such a question. And then I need to decide which of my pre-prepared answers will I spring on them. We all have these answers – I’m passionate about running or I’m passionate about saving the environment. Broad answers that sound correct but may not be entirely accurate because to truly reveal what you’re passionate about to people involves trust and knowledge. You have to trust them with the truth and hope they add to your knowledge rather than leach it away.

One other thing to consider – think about on what you were passionate about ten years ago, five years, one year? My passions have changed. And this reminds me that my students passions will change – subtly or in broad dynamic strokes as they begin to realise who they are as a person.

So, what am I passionate about? Depends on who’s asking but I will give you my filler lists and, maybe someday, I will give you my real list.

Learning. Classic teacher response but I love learning new pieces of information, filling up the filing cabinets in my mind with random knowledge that I can whip out at a whim. I have been toying with the idea of attempting my Masters degree but we’ll see. Sometimes fear gets in the way of the passion. But everyday I like to find out something new. Something interesting that might not mean much to others but means something to me. I’m definitely a magpie or a crow.

Travel. And my students know this since I remind them constantly that one of the best things that they can do is travel – nothing like eating crickets in Cambodia or tasting tea in Vietnam or downing a churro at Disneyland. I have a bucket list in my mind and I will continue to tick things off as I go. There is something about going into a new place and finding myself completely disoriented and then finding food. I quite enjoy food.

Sharing knowledge. Not just the knowledge needed to pass tests but the knowledge that there is more to the world than school or the town they have grown up in. I constantly share knowledge – even if it isn’t wanted. I guess that’s partially why I enjoy teaching because I have a (sometimes) captive audience who challenge me every day to extend them. I want students to share in this love of knowledge and learning.

My challenge to you is to think about what you are truly passionate about. Have you done anything to develop that passion or, like me, have you put your true passions on hold while you try to figure out if they are what you really want?

I also want you to think about your students and what they are truly passionate about and how we, as educators, guide them and also show them that it is okay to be passionate about maybe collecting toy dinosaurs…
